Biographies and Memoirs

1. Short definition of the genre:

Biography is a non-fiction genre based on the truthful account of an individual's life, encompassing thought, emotion, intention and experience in addition to the more mundane facts such as where they were born, where they went to school, etc.  An autobiography is a biography written by the subject.   A memoir is an autobiography that focuses on a certain period of the subject's life, not covering their entire life from birth until death.

Gore Vidal, in his own memoir Palimpsest, writes that "a memoir is how one remembers one's own life, while an autobiography is history, requiring research, dates, facts double-checked." It is more about what can be gleaned from a section of one's life than about the outcome of the life as a whole.
